We can give out library card numbers as long as we can verify someone's identity with a picture i.d.

Change and Refunds and Computer Time
I have been remiss in posting this info.
- We are no longer giving out change at all.
- We are also no longer given refunds for the vending machines. We are basically out of the vending machine business. If anyone comes to you for a refund refer them to the number on the vending machine. It ain't the best customer service but it is the solution we arrived at with FreshBrew.
- If we are not busy and a customer has exhausted their two hours, it is perfectly alright to extend their time. As with most things, this is a judgment call. If you feel like someone is abusing the system excessively and you deny the extension, I will back you up. See next post for how to do this.

Staff Copy Cards
I have added $25.00 to each of the 3M test cards via the OCE/Pharos systems. These can be used for staff and work-related copies.

New Laptop Policy
As of today, all kids under 18 will have to have parental permission to check out a laptop.
1) CREATING ACCOUNTS: When creating a card for an 18 y.o. or younger, you will come across a NOTE in MilCirc that says "Laptop Permission Granted: YES or NO". Complete this note based on how the parent has filled out the card application. If the parent has checked "Yes", delete the "or NO" section; if the parent has checked "No", delete the "YES or" portion.
2) CHECKING OUT LAPTOPS: When checking out laptops, simply check any juvenile account in MilCirc to see if permission has been granted. If the note indicates "Laptop Permission Granted: NO" or if there is no note, then the child cannot check out a laptop and must have a parent fill out a new application and check YES before a laptop can be issued.
If you have any questions about this, please refer them to Mike or Edward.
Thanks,
mvc

Fat Clients, Printing, and Computer Registration
As of today, we have fat clients. Registration is done at the registration station, which is where the old print station was. Customers must go to this computer and click the "To Reserve a Computer..." button. They will then type in their PowerCard number and a password. They will then be assigned a computer or placed in a queue if all computers are in use. IT is the customer's responsibility to watch for their reservation. We will eventually get a large screen in the Internet Cafe where folks can wait for their computer to come up. The left Ref desk computer has the reservation software, where we can monitor who is on what computer, change passwords, extend time, etc. We will hold a formal training on Monday on all of this.
Important point: The fat clients allow customers to use all MS products and allow access to the CD drive, the USB ports, etc. so folks can burn CDs, use flash drives, and run CD-ROMs.
Also, we are solely using the Oce system for printing now. All public computers are routed to this system. If you did not have a chance to use the system during the pilot, let Edward or I know and we will make sure you get trained on how to use it.
Remember: Change is good--and fun!

Reference and Register
All reference staff (including me): please do not use the register. We have had a few issues with shortages, overages, and unaccounted for overrings. To keep the intended checks and balances in place only circ folks should use the register. If someone asks you to ring something up, refer it to a circ staffer.

ILL Payments
When an ILL arrives with an envelope requesting payment, please do not release the item to the customer unless they give you payment. ILL has already spoken with the customer and they know how to make out the check. When you do receive payment, place it in the envelope and send it to ILL in delivery.
